Intelligent Design: Simplify the Approach

Key-Plus-RingOften the most revolutionary solution to a problem, design or otherwise, is the easiest to implement... And overlook. Rather than create new methods or invent new products, the most graceful and creative approach may be entirely conventional and simple. You just have to look at it from a slightly unconventional angle.

Take Scott Amron as an example. He makes his living taking everyday problems and making prototypes of products to solve them for companies like Oxo.

Enter the Key-Plus-Ring. Not a very sexy name but it does explain itself clearly. There are so many products available to solve the problem of organizing or storing keys - Fobs, devices to clip them onto things, caribiners, neck tethers, keyrings, shoe pockets, etc. Granted, it's not a HUGE problem but it is enough of an inconvenience to invent the long list of aformentioned products.

So what was Scott's contribution to this overly brainstormed range of products?Get rid of the extra parts and simplify - The keyring is part of the key.

Graceful, intelligent and creative. Provide function and simplify the process without complicating the problem or adding uneccessary fluff. A good lesson for any type of design.
